Pounding the Pavement Whilst Others are Partying Could Mean the Difference Between Job Make or Break in 2010

Posted on 09 December 2009 by admin

For the 2.46 million workers unemployed, this Christmas presents the perfect reason to loosen the tie and hang up the interview suit for a few weeks fuelled by the false belief that “no one hires during December,” particularly when half of British companies will be nursing their heads after Christmas parties.

But according to TheLadders.co.uk, the careers site for Britain’s senior executives, pounding the pavement now may make the difference between starting 2010 settling into a new position and competing for one with the hordes of job-seekers who slacked their search for the festivities.

“It’s a myth that no jobs get filled during the last six weeks of the year”, said Derek Pilcher, Managing Director of TheLadders.co.uk, which lists many of the UK’s £50K plus positions.

“January is the busiest job hunting time of the year, but the people who are hired in January are usually those who applied and interviewed in prior months. You don’t hire somebody on Jan. 5 that you met on Jan. 3, you hire somebody you met in November or December,” Pilcher continues.

To help job-seekers pounding the pavements this festive season, TheLadders.co.uk has developed a series of tips designed to secure that new position for the New Year.

Create Your 2010 CV: Look back over 2009 and what has happened in your career. What have you learned from your experience and what new skills have you acquired. Update your CV so you can translate even the most recent experiences into opportunities for 2010.

The Pre-Christmas Push: Companies with open jobs will often push to fill them before year end, especially if there is any concern about losing positions in next year’s budget, so review all jobs you have seen advertised and / or applied for over the last four weeks. Follow them up and close the opportunities.

Leave no stone unturned:  There are jobs out there and a deadline to fill them. Ensure that you use every available avenue – personal contacts, the web, agencies to leave no stone unturned.

Make the Most of Party Season: Christmas is all about parties and what better place to network and spread the word about your skills. This may present new opportunities for 2010 or even secure an interview for the perfect position. Who knows the first interview you get in the New Year could be from the Christmas party.

Stay focused. It will be hard to keep your head when all about are losing theirs, but staying focused, even between Christmas and New Year will mean that yours may be the call that reaches the boss whilst the PA is away. Don’t lose sight of the opportunity that less competition presents.

And Be Creative. If you have interviews lined up before Christmas, be creative. Find out when the company is having its Christmas party and if it’s the day before your interview take some hangover treats, coffee, muffins to make sure your interviewer remembers that you did your homework.

Traveljobsearch.com records record number of visitors

Posted on 16 November 2009 by admin

Traveljobsearch.com – one of the leading websites for people seeking work in the travel industry – has recorded record numbers of visitors making it the biggest Travel and leisure specific job board in Britain.

The site, which is run by the Simply Jobs group, saw a four per cent rise in visitors last month, giving it a 63 per cent market share of online travel recruitment.

The figures mean Traveljobsearch.com has an impressive 38 per cent over its nearest rival, Travelweekly.co.uk, and 53 per cent more than competitor Travelindustryjobs.co.uk.

Ian Partington, managing director of Traveljobsearch.com said the website’s dominant position in the market was down to the trusted reputation it enjoyed among job seekers and clients.

”With more than 1,000 positions and 78,000 job seekers registered at any one time, Traveljobsearch.com is a great tool for anyone looking for work, or any boss looking to fill a role in their firm,” he said.

”We have a trusted reputation among clients for offering quality candidates for positions and our website is also easy to navigate for those looking for work and gives them instant access to scores of jobs.

”The travel industry has been particularly badly hit by the global recession with hundreds of redundancies made throughout the sector.

”This, coupled with our success at placing those seeking employment in new jobs, has boosted our standing in the industry and is undoubtedly fuelling a rise in visitors to the site each month.”

How to find a job using your marketing degree

Posted on 16 November 2009 by admin

You’ve got your marketing degree but what else should you be doing to ensure employers are attracted to you?

What are the biggest challenges facing university graduates who are looking to secure career positions?  More and more we are hearing about the graduates leaving university, unable to secure work at all, let alone in their chosen profession.  Whilst the number of marketing jobs and, indeed, graduate marketing jobs may be on the rise, competition is fierce.

You are in a better position than some though.  Marketing is a sought-after industry and thousands of marketing vacancies are over-subscribed with applications from people without any tangible knowledge at all.

So what more could graduates be doing to effectively promote themselves?

Here are six top tips to help you get started:

On-the-job experience

Qualifications are great but employers would rather combine these with life and work experience. Most marketing degree courses offer the chance to apply your knowledge in a commercial environment but if you haven’t managed to do this, keep trying.  A lot of employers have neither the time or the money to pay an intern but by offering them something for nothing or by being innovative it is amazing what comes up.

A great place to look for intern marketing vacancies online is Rate My Placement.

Organising your CV

Despite the current age of digital technology the common CV remains the key ingredient to any jobseeker’s application process.  And it should not be taken lightly.

Whizzing your CV off to email addresses and ‘Apply Now’ buttons is the easy part but once it reaches the intended destination you have no control over who reads it or what they gain from doing so.  Therefore, you need to ensure you have sufficiently and professionally optimised this sales tool.

Of course most recent graduates will only have a limited amount of work experience to add to their employment history.  It is important, then, to maximise what you say about yourself – your ‘softer’ skills.  This is where developing a fantastic personal profile and writing a compelling cover letter comes in.

Read how to write the perfect cover letter and produce an amazing profile via individual career coaching.

Social media

These days employers are as likely to find you as you are them. With more than 70% of employers admitting to checking candidate credentials online at some stage during the interview process, it is essential you are not only visible but visible for the right reasons.

You need to ensure that the information you post on your social pages is both accurate and sends out the right signals about you. This should be your first step to ensuring a good application strategy.

If you are looking for marketing jobs make sure you hang out in all the right places. Some good places to start are: LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and Ning.

Personal Branding

In any climate standing out from the crowd is essential. Simply submitting your CV is no longer good enough.

Investing time (and a little money) into developing the way people perceive you will set you apart from your competition. Are you dressed appropriately for the occasion? How sincere is your handshake?  Have you considered the impact of your non-verbal communication (NVC)?  These are a few of many essential elements in the compilation of ‘brand you’.

Of course, personal branding is not just about the way you look.  And it is not all about face-to-face interaction, either.  Your online presence is just as important.

Above all though, personal branding is about confidence.

Learn more about developing ‘brand you’ and maximising your career chances with a personal branding expert.

Networking

Any marketer serious about their career needs to network.  Establishing and building contacts is essential to both personal and business development.  Online networking is, of course, a critical component to any progressive strategy but nothing beats face-to-face interaction.

You should look to attend as many marketing events, seminars, conferences and professional social occasions as possible – time and money permitting, of course.

Make no mistake, getting out there, showing people who you are, what you do and – most importantly – what you can do for them, is imperative to any jobseeker’s strategy.

Applying to suitable vacancies

The key word here is ‘suitable’.  Too many graduates spend their time applying for positions for which they are clearly unsuitable.  This is incredibly counter-productive and never pays off.  All you will achieve is a sense of under-achievement as the frustration of not hearing back from your application heightens.

When searching for jobs to apply to go for job titles such as Marketing Assistant, Marketing Administrator or Marketing Executive.  Whilst not everything is in a name this will provide you with some guidance.

As for salaries, most graduate-level marketing jobs start between £18-24,000 per annum, though certain disciplines will pay more.

Technojobs nominated for Best Specialist Job Board

Posted on 11 November 2009 by admin

Technojobs are honoured with the announcement that they have been nominated as a finalist in the 2009 National Online Recruitment Awards in the category “Best Specialist (Niche) Job Board”.

There are thousands of specialist jobsites in the UK, so to be a finalist is a fantastic achievement. Additionally, Technojobs are the only IT specialist jobsite to be nominated in 2009.

The National Online Recruitment Awards received almost 25,000 nominations for 654 separate recruitment websites this year. These awards mean Technojobs have been recognised by their users, clients and peers as a market leading specialist jobsite.

This nomination caps an excellent year for Technojobs, who recently successfully launched eleven new niche IT and technical sites, creating a targeted network of sites for advertisers.

Technojobs and their respective network of sites are now No.1 on Google for hundreds of top key search terms on Google, generating high calibre specialist candidates. There are over 10,000 jobs live and there are over 125,000 registered specialist candidates.

Anthony Sherick, Head of Sales and Marketing at Technojobs said, “Being nominated is a massive achievement for Technojobs so we are all very pleased. Despite the slowdown, we have continually invested in organic growth and all our performance metrics, including market share reflect this. Our strategy of specialist and targeted marketing works exceptionally well for advertisers. We will continue to invest over the next twelve months and look forward to an exciting 2010”.

CV-Library celebrates hitting two million CVs

Posted on 29 October 2009 by admin

CV-Library, one of the UK’s fastest growing job sites, has announced that it now has a remarkable two million live CVs registered in its online database.

After hitting one million CVs in October 2008, CV-Library has managed to double this figure in only a year, growing from a two man office into a Hitwise Top 10 recognised site.

This is particularly impressive considering it hasn’t had any corporate backing like many of its competitors, but has achieved organic growth.  With 100,000 CV registrations and 379,000 job applications per month, CV-Library is extremely proud of its rapid growth.

Director Lee Biggins comments “CV-Library is proud to hit two million CVs, but it is not only the size of the database that is important, it is the phenomenal rate we are registering candidates on a daily basis.”

Despite the recent downturn, the company is emerging more successful than ever.  CV-Library is in the process of expanding and is also planning on recruiting more team members in the coming months.  Although they have a relatively small workforce of 20 staff, the company is competing heavily with job boards in excess of 100 employees.  This expansion is a positive sign given the current market. This also highlights that many recruiters are still choosing to predominantly recruit from online databases rather than source candidates from other forms of media, particularly social media.

The company has been nominated for a customer service award at the 2009 London and South East Recruitment Awards and has also been nominated as Best Generalist Job Board in the National Online Recruitment Awards (NORAs) 2009.
